At this point, you’ve seen a brand host a social media contest, you’ve entered in hopes of winning a sweet prize, maybe a friend has tagged you in a brand’s Instagram giveaway or perhaps you even remember the Red Swimsuit Fiasco.
Hosting successful social media contests are an integral part of building your brand’s successful social media strategy. They offer value to your social media followers, build trust and boost hype around your business.

✔️Social media rules and regulations for your promotions that you must follow for each platform
First things first, in our experience the highest performing contests run when the barriers to entry are low.
It’s unbelievably hard to get people to stop their scroll and click over to your website where they have to sign up or comment on your blog post. It’s possible, but the prize has to be REALLY good (like an HGTV Dream Home, good).
Instagram Contest Ideas
TAG A FRIEND:
This is our personal favorite. Super easy to enter- all your followers have to do is tag a friend (or 20+). You can set the rules as to how many times they can enter. We do suggest that you mention in your official rules that each entry must be UNIQUE so that they aren’t tagging the same person over and over. We used this Instagram contest idea for @theatticonbroadway to promote their Super Bowl catering menu.
This is a fun contest idea if you want to get creative (and a little weird). It’s also a great way to get your brand involved in more Instagram Stories. Note: this idea is a little more involved so it’ll work better if you have a captive audience.
Post a brand image in your Instagram Story that you want people to decorate
Ask them to hold down on the screen and take a screenshot for a clean image
Prompt them decorate your brand image with GIFS, stickers, text, you name it
Have them repost their story and tag your brand to be counted as an entry
You can regram your favorites and select a winner

NAME PHOTO ELEMENTS:
If you have a product with a lot of parts (ie, several toppings, new decor, ingredients) this is a great idea for you.
Post an image and make your entrants guess everything in the photo
The winner is the first person to correctly name everything.
We used this contest for @320Main to draw attention to their interior tiki makeover.
If you use Facebook to communicate or administer a promotion (ex: a contest or sweepstakes), you are responsible for the lawful operation of that promotion, including:
The official rules;
Offer terms and eligibility requirements (ex: age and residency restrictions); and
Compliance with applicable rules and regulations governing the promotion and all prizes offered (ex: registration and obtaining necessary regulatory approvals).
Promotions on Facebook must include the following:
A complete release of Facebook by each entrant or participant; and
Acknowledgement that the promotion is in no way sponsored, endorsed, administered by or associated with Facebook.
Administration of a Promotion
Promotions may be administered on Pages, Groups, Events, or within apps on Facebook. Personal Timelines and friend connections must not be used to administer promotions (ex: “share on your Timeline to enter” or “share on your friend’s Timeline to get additional entries”, and “tag your friends in this post to enter” are not permitted).
Facebook will not assist you in the administration of your promotion, and you agree that if you use our service to administer your promotion, you do so at your own risk.
