Social Media Contests that will Boost your Business

Social Media Contests that will Boost your Business

At this point, you’ve seen a brand host a social media contest, you’ve entered in hopes of winning a sweet prize, maybe a friend has tagged you in a brand’s Instagram giveaway or perhaps you even remember the Red Swimsuit Fiasco.

Hosting successful social media contests are an integral part of building your brand’s successful social media strategy. They offer value to your social media followers, build trust and boost hype around your business.

We’re sharing:

  • ✔️Our favorite social media contest ideas
  • ✔️Our best practices
  • ✔️Social media rules and regulations for your promotions that you must follow for each platform

First things first, in our experience the highest performing contests run when the barriers to entry are low.

It’s unbelievably hard to get people to stop their scroll and click over to your website where they have to sign up or comment on your blog post. It’s possible, but the prize has to be REALLY good (like an HGTV Dream Home, good).

Instagram Contest Ideas

TAG A FRIEND:

This is our personal favorite. Super easy to enter- all your followers have to do is tag a friend (or 20+). You can set the rules as to how many times they can enter. We do suggest that you mention in your official rules that each entry must be UNIQUE so that they aren’t tagging the same person over and over. We used this Instagram contest idea for @theatticonbroadway to promote their Super Bowl catering menu.

🔥 🏈 GIVEAWAY CLOSED 🏈 🔥Be the real winner at your Super Bowl party with catering from The Attic! We’re giving away a $50 credit towards Super Bowl catering – Enter by tagging your friends in the comments below. Multiple entries ARE allowed. Must be following @theatticonbroadway to win. Last day to enter is 2/1/18🍴Winner will be randomly selected and notified on Friday, February 2nd. Link in bio for catering menu. #theatticonbroadway

STORY DOODLES:

This is a fun contest idea if you want to get creative (and a little weird). It’s also a great way to get your brand involved in more Instagram Stories. Note: this idea is a little more involved so it’ll work better if you have a captive audience.

  1. Post a brand image in your Instagram Story that you want people to decorate
  2. Ask them to hold down on the screen and take a screenshot for a clean image
  3. Prompt them decorate your brand image with GIFS, stickers, text, you name it
  4. Have them repost their story and tag your brand to be counted as an entry
  5. You can regram your favorites and select a winner

NAME PHOTO ELEMENTS:

If you have a product with a lot of parts (ie, several toppings, new decor, ingredients) this is a great idea for you.

  1. Post an image and make your entrants guess everything in the photo
  2. The winner is the first person to correctly name everything.

We used this contest for @320Main to draw attention to their interior tiki makeover.

🙌 🍹 GIVEAWAY TIME!! 🍹 🙌 As we all know, 320 MAIN has undergone some TIKI changes in the restaurant … so: the FIRST PERSON to name EVERYTHING NEW in this photo WINS! ((**Hint: there are SIX changes.)) Winner gets a $25 gift card and will be selected and announced on this post Friday, March 16th by midnight. Good luck!

OPEN ENDED:

Ask a question to your followers (ie Goals, Motivation, Inspiration, Story) and have them answer in the comments. I absolutely love this example on @outdoorvoices.

USER GENERATED CONTENT:

Want to incorporate more of your customers photos? Just ask!

  1. Set specific image guidelines so their images will match your brand or let your customers have complete creative freedom
  2. Have them use a specific #hashtag + tag you in their photo
  3. You can regram your favorites and select a winner

TERMS AND CONDITIONS FOR CONSIDERATION:

It’s very important to lay out all of your terms and conditions before you post. Here are a few items for you to consider when you’re laying the groundwork for your social media contest.

  • ✔️Entry deadline
  • ✔️When will the winner be announced?
  • ✔️How will you announce or notify the winner?
  • ✔️Who has final permission/image rights? Does using a #hashtag make it OK to use?
  • ✔️Do they need to be following you? Someone else?
  • ✔️Do they need to like AND comment?
  • ✔️How many entries are allowed per participant?
  • ✔️How will the winner be selected? At random (we use a random number generator based on comment number)? Your choice?
